Old photo gallery removed
Zář 26th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

I’ve finally removed my old photo gallery (established in 2001) and everything is now in one structure of Gallery2. 2901 pictures contained within 162 albums has been moved in 20 hours of sorting and guessing where and when. Then it took my server 6 minutes to remove all old content from the disk array (simply executing shell command rm -rf obsoleted). Now I have more than 20 GB of new free space.

Some dates and places in the Gallery2 titles and descriptions are probably incorrect, so please tell me if you find something to make clear.

Rewards in TV Nova
Zář 20th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

As you probably know the editor Michal Velíšek died and TV Nova set the reward for his killer. Funny 100 kCZK …

But it’s a bitter fun in context of 10 Mega CZK prize in their reality show. Sounds to me like a derision that the reward for the killer is only the fragment of their prizes.

GNU.CZ is down
Zář 8th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

GNU.CZ webserver is temporarily unavailable, so you can’t read the texts of for example LGPL. Sad but true.

The staff states on the main page that the disk array filesystem has been damaged and some data corrupt. Sad but true. Does anybody know the details?

Reality show mania
Srp 25th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

The nation has been caught up by the reality show fever. First show started few days ago and the next one will start I think in September on the main commercial channel. I haven’t seen it yet, because I’ve recently limited smoking and I’m not ready to watch the show yet. But, I admit that I’m really curious.

And of course, it’s nice to see how the download speeds on almost any media (including the backbones) grow during the show every day.

Gmail released
Srp 24th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

Today was the day of unexpected releases. The first was Google Talk (as I noted before in this article) and now the same company released it’s popular Gmail to the general public.

I personally think that it was not planned, but the existing Gmail account is needed to use Google Talk, so they’ve made the decision to release Gmail (after 16 months of beta testing) to support the Google Talk.

Both services are free, but commercial and not as open as we want them. But they work so well, that they will be a must have in a few months.

Google Talk is here
Srp 24th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

The world’s most popular search engine provider introduced it’s beta version of Google Talk. Let’s take a closer look on it.

It is a small application available only for windows. But you have not to be worried, because it’s based on XMMP formal standard defined by IETF and previously by the Jabber open-source community. These standards are open and there are many IM client implementations available.

It supports Google accounts and integrates Gmail address book. That’s good and bad, because you need the existing Gmail account to use it, so you also need an invitation from the Gmail user (eg. me).
It supports not only instant messaging but very nice voice communication too. It will probably use SIP in the near future and I guess that video will follow in less than one year.

Usually beta in Google’s native language means something more than very useful. For example Gmail is the technology leader in web-based e-mail and I suppose that Google Talk will achieve leadership in instant messaging very soon, because it is crystal clear, it has nice and simple interface and it works.

One question remains. Who will be listed as the bestseller of wireless VoIP headsets in Czech Republic on Froogle?

State symbol changed
Srp 12th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

The government stated today, that they are changing the official state symbol from the Lion to the condom, because this symbol much better expresses the government politics. The condom can dilate same as the inflation, it also lowers the production, destroys next generations, protects dicks and gives the man the feeling of safety while being fucked.

Never try to outperform a teenager
Čvc 20th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

Today, as almost every second Wednesday, I have been playing soccer with my colleagues. Also I took with me my manager’s younger brother.

The story begins with 15 years old, 5 and half feet tall teenager Tomáš (or at least I hope it’s his name) playing soccer with heavily experienced 20 to 40+ years old guys. Some of them were really tough, so he probably wanted to show them, he is much better than they presumed. And to be honest, he performed very well. Really, he could be an excellent player.

Ehm, everything went normally during the first twenty minutes. Until I decided to take the ball from Tomáš. And he decided to show us his shot of the year. In that moment, the distance between me and the ball was less than 1,5 meter. You can probably simply imagine what happened.

I was running to the ball from one side and he was running from the opposite side. He was faster, because he is younger, more flexible and blah, blah, blah … and of course he does not smoke.

After he reached the ball, he fired. I raised my hand to protect the face, but I was not fast enough, so the ball clicked my finger bones to my face. It was the same as running very fast towards somebody’s fist. I know it sounds funny, but trust me, it’s not.
Now I look like a boxing match outsider after six very hard rounds (hope that there are no photos publicly available). The skin around my left eye covering the cheek bone plays every possible color from violet to dark green. Fortunately neither the nose nor the cheek bone is broken, but both look like. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

So kids, what have you learnt today?

Fast speeds and bad tyres — continued
Čvc 20th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

The Barum Continental company experts found out, why my tyre accidentally exploded. It was because the tyre valve has been broken by something on the road, some small piece of stone or more probably a pit edge. Unfortunately, pits appear very regularly on our highways. The man in the tyre service station told me that all of remaining tyre valves should be replaced because they are old as so the probability of breaking another one is very high. So I replaced them and now I feel much safer.

Fast speeds and bad tyres
Čer 18th, 2005 / Jirka Pech

Me and my two passengers quietly survived the explosion of one and half year old Barum Brilantis tyre on left back wheel in the speed near to 140 km/h. Tyre exploded without any visible reason on it’s full height (about 7 centimeters) on the outer side of the wheel. Nobody has been injured and nothing has been damaged (except the tyre itself). Am I not the lucky man?

You can look at the photo.
